“Promoting the confidence and engagement of parents”: an Ofsted priority for schools
The latest Ofsted framework will be in place for school inspections from 1 January 2012.
Do you know that in order to obtain an outstanding judgement in terms of Leadership and Management you have to evidence that:
“The school has highly successful strategies for engaging with parents and carers, to the very obvious benefit of pupils, including those who might traditionally find working with the school difficult.”
How does your school match up to this overall requirement?
How well do you think you are doing in relation to working with your parents and carers to secure the following key Ofsted requirements?
- Helping to address inequality and disadvantage – particularly in relation to the needs of disabled pupils and those with special educational needs
- How well the school systematically and consistently manages behaviour – specifically including work with parents
- How well the school focuses on the aspects of its work that raise pupil achievement – including “engaging with parents and carers in supporting pupils’ achievement”
But parental engagement requirements do not stop here. You will also need to evidence:
- Engaging parents in contributing to and realising the vision of school leaders
- Engaging ‘other adults’ in pupils’ learning, including the contribution of homework to learning
- Engaging with parents in relation to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural aspects of pupils’ development
The 2012 Ofsted framework will give “greater consideration” to the views of parents, and these will be taken into account when “planning and carrying out inspections” and to “inform inspection activities” and “inform judgements”.
